Renewable Energy Fee Passed

Independent Alligator (UF Student Newspaper)

September 5, 2008

"A renewable energy fee that would charge students 50 cents per credit hour was unanimously approved by the board’s Educational Policy and Strategy Committee.

The revenue would be spent on projects that conserve energy, such as adding solar panels, and would be allocated by a committee of students, faculty and staff.

The fee must be approved by the rest of the board."

Florida Universities Push for "Green Fees "

Orlando Business Journal May 2007

"Students from the University of Central Florida, New College, Florida Atlantic University and the University of Florida are working to kick-start a funding source to apply environmentally friendly practices on campuses.

The first phase of the plan is to incorporate a proposed 50- to 75-cent "green fee" into tuition to finance projects that would campus energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The proposals are asking for a campus sustainability committee made up of students, faculty and staff to oversee those funds.

UCF's green fee campaign is expected to be voted on by students during the student government elections in the fall. It follows the national campaign Campus Climate Challenge, under which similar proposals have been made at southeastern colleges, such as the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and the University of Tennessee."

Students unite to bring clean energy to campus

The Miami Herald
Students from the University of Central Florida, New College, Florida Atlantic University and University of Florida are working on plans to get a ''Green Fee'' -- proposed at 50 to 75 cents per credit hour that students would pay -- approved at their schools. The money would go to financing projects to make campuses environmentally friendly and conserve energy.

The cost to students is proposed to be about $14 a year, or the equivalent of a large cheese pizza.

Administrations ''have been fairly interested in pursuing these goals'' but they have limited funding, said Jason Misner, Florida Campus Organizer for the Southern Energy Network, a project of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. Misner said having students fork over the funds can help get a jump start on making a change.

Florida Students Want Clean Energy… Now!

Sentiment is the same across the state: Students want clean energy. Over the past year, students from UCF, New College, FAU and UF have been putting together a comprehensive plan to attain their goals of getting clean energy on their campuses. The first phase of the plan is to begin a “Green Fee” paid along with tuition.
